Welcome to Pack 490!
Pack 490 of Delaware, Ohio is part of the Sparrow Lodge in the Delaware District. We support Cheshire Elementary and surrounding areas in Delaware.
PURPOSE OF CUB SCOUTING: The purpose of this Pack is to provide for Scouts an effective educational program designed to build desirable qualities of character; to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship; and to develop personal fitness. In Cub Scouting, children, families, leaders, and chartered organizations work together to achieve the following objectives:
- Influence a Scout’s character development and spiritual growth.
- Develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship.
- Encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body.
- Improve understanding within the family.
- Strengthen a Scout’s ability to get along with others.
- Foster a sense of personal achievement by developing new interests and skills.
- Provide fun and exciting new things to do.
- Show a Scout how to be helpful.
CHARTER: Pack 490 is chartered by the Simon Kenton Council. The chartered organization provides a suitable meeting place and facilities for Pack meetings, adult leadership, supervision, and opportunities for a healthy Scouting life for the children under its care. It is the umbrella organization for several Packs in the region. There are several Packs in the Boy Scouts of America.
CUB SCOUT ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE (National, Regional, Local):
Cub Scout Pack 490 is a group of Dens that comprise a Pack in the Simon Kenton Council. Each Den must have at least 1 Den leader and 1 other leader.
The Pack Committee consists of a Committee Chair, Pack Secretary, Pack Treasurer. Other positions in the Pack include (but are not limited to) the Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, Pack Membership and Re-registration Chair, Pack Advancement Chair, Pack Trainer, Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders, Parents and Guardians.
All scout parents, guardians and leaders are welcome to attend the Pack Leadership meetings. Those interested in more information about the leadership positions can go here.
FAMILY/PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Cub Scouting gives families an opportunity to spend quality time together. It is the leader's role to provide interest, skill and time in developing a good program for scouts while involving parents and families when possible. The family provides help and support for the Den and Pack. Families can help in many different ways, which may vary from family to family, depending upon family structures and other family responsibilities. Some of the examples of family involvement include:
- Working with their Cub Scout on achievements and electives.
- Helping at Den and Pack meetings and events.
- Helping keep the Pack members and families safe.
- Having fun! And helping others to do so as well.
SAFETY: It is important for every member of the Pack to remember safety at all times. As such, every parent is encouraged to review the “How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide” every year with each Scout. Every parent is also encouraged to take the online “Youth Protection Training” available through My.Scouting.Org. No scout shall be alone with an adult at any time unless that adult is a parent. The “2-deep leadership” rules apply for all parents and leaders at all Scouting events.
MEMBERSHIP: Pack 490 is open to all boys and girls from kindergarten to fifth grade. We encourage a diverse group of individuals to help encourage community, inclusivity, empathy and tolerance both locally and around the world. Children are encouraged to maintain an active interest in their religious preference. No child will be turned away because of financial hardship. Those wishing to join should talk with the Pack Membership and Re-registration Chair.
ATTENDANCE: All Cub Scouts and their parents are encouraged to support their Den and Pack through active participation in Den and Pack activities. A parent should join their child at Den meetings and help the Den leader(s) whenever possible. The entire family is welcome at Pack meetings and many outings are intended for the families. Smartphone usage and other activities that distract from active participation in Den and Pack activities are discouraged.
UNIFORM: Blue and Gold are the Cub Scout colors. They have special meaning: The blue stands for truth and spirituality, steadfast loyalty, and the sky above. The gold stands for warm sunlight, good cheer and happiness.
